World Environment Day

“We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.”
– Thomas Fuller, Historian

True. Isn’t it? We don’t realize the value of something unless it is gone. The same is happening with our environment and our planet. We don’t have any other planet to go to, once we have destroyed the one we are living on. However, the good news is that we have all the opportunities to be at peace with nature by doing our bit. How? Celebrate the World Environment Day that is around the corner and you will know.

We know the need of the hour is to plant more trees, increase greenery, eat healthy, clean rivers, beaches, coasts, etc. The time needs you to seize the moment and make the most of it.

So, pause.

Rethink. Refurbish. Renew.

For this purpose, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) organizes World Environment Day events every year, encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environmental protection.

World Environment Day Date 2021

Environment day is celebrated on 5th June every year in over 100 countries.

History of World Environment Day

The UN General Assembly has the credit when it comes to environment day background. It was in 1972 when the assembly designated June 5 as World Environment Day (WED).
Looking back, it is evident that Environment Day was first celebrated in 1974. “Only One Earth” was the slogan of World Environment Day then.
In 1987, it was declared that WED celebrations will be held in different countries. Moreover, consumption patterns along within national and international environmental policies are modified with WED.

Why is Environment Day Celebrated?

Why is Environment Day Celebrated

World Environment Day is celebrated so that we are reminded about how precious our environment is.
It has been decades when we have been exploiting our ecosystems to the extent of the destruction. A forest cover, equivalent to a football pitch in size is destroyed every three seconds! Half of our wetlands are damaged over the last century. We have already lost almost 50% of our coral reefs. And this is not it. By 2050, up to 90% of coral reefs could be lost even if global warming continues to amplify restrictedly at 1.5°C!
Alarming! Isn’t it?
So, it is celebrated with the approach to engage governments, businesses, and citizens to attend to critical environmental issues.

It has become an occasion to raise environment-related awareness for issues such as global warming, air pollution, human overpopulation, food security, wildlife protection, sea-level increase, sustainable consumption, plastic pollution, marine pollution, and even more. As it is now spread all over the world, WED is not just an occasion anymore but also a global platform. Ecosystem Restoration is the theme of World Environment Day 2021. Ecosystem restoration means checking, halting, and reversing the damage done to the ecosystem and going from exploiting nature to healing it. So, the focus will be on nurturing a healthy relationship with nature.
The day will witness the launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030. This will be backed by a global mission to restore billions of hectares, ranging from forests to farmlands, from the mountain tops to the depth of the sea.
The need of the hour is to stop the breaking up biodiversity and this is possible only with healthy ecosystems. This will further augment livelihood opportunities and prevent climate changes.
